  • This Lucca tour is all about experiencing the city the real way, by becoming a local for a day! Italy is famed for the importance it places on food and drink, so of course, we learn about (and taste!) lots of it as we go. And along the way, we uncover majestic city walls, narrow roads, tall towers, and arts and crafts shops. You also realise why Lucca is known as the city of 100 churches.

Your walking tour of Lucca starts at the city’s train station, and from there we walk past the majestic city walls and enjoy a view of Lucca before diving into local life. We head to the city centre, where the beautiful Romanesque marble Cathedral stands.

We then head to a favourite local spot: San Michele in Foro Square. This is where locals come to meet up with one another, typically for a friendly chat in a nice coffee bar.

Lucca’s locals love going for aperitivo after work — meeting with friends and spending a few hours indulging in a glass of good wine and some savoury snacks. And because this tour is all about showing you local life, of course our first stop is an old vineria, a small wine bar typical of the Tuscan tradition, where we order a glass of wine with a snack.

We then head to Amphitheatre Square, the only oval square in Italy that takes the place of the typical Roman amphitheatre. We relax with a glass of artisan beer produced in the Garfagnana mountains — and, of course, you can’t sample beer without a side of cured meats and pecorino cheese.

We then head to a local lounge where we can try fettunta, a toasted bread with extra olive oil — as well as another glass of quality wine.

Our last stop on our exploration of Lucca is a small wine bar where we can have our final drink. And if you want to truly go local, then it’s time to try the typical liqueur of Lucca, Biadina, made from a secret recipe and served with pine nuts.

  • Mrs. Roxanne W. from Australia travelled on 29 Oct 2017:

We were more than satisfied with our adventure in Lucca on October 16 with our guide Luca Russo. His knowledge about Italian cuisine and the history of the the city and its environs were most impressive. The walking tour was very informative and Luca’s interest in history and architecture were infectious. When we visited the restaurants for aperitivo samples what a treat! The samples were generous and delicious. We had a wonderful time and our tour with Luca was the highlight of our ten day stay in Luca Italy. You have a real “keeper” wth Luca as a guide! Thanks.

Mrs. REBECCACATHERINE P. from Australia travelled on 05 Jul 2017:

Borana our guide for our Lucca Aperitivo Adventure was outstanding. Craig and I really felt we spent time with a local who was passionate about the history of Lucca and it’s well preserved Renaissance walls.
Borana was full of insightful facts her knowledge of her home town kept us entertained whilst walking though the beautiful cobbled streets of Lucca.
Borana really gave us the taste for aperitivio which we continued on through our travels through Italy. She took us to traditional family owed business to sample Tuscan food accompanied by local wine.
If you are reading this and thinking about going to Italy visit Lucca (it is amazing place which should not be missed of any holiday itinerary) and partake in this Urban Adventure tour. We would suggest you do it on the first night as Borana was only too happy to give suggests of places to eat and drink and we certainly would have revisited the places visited on the tour for Aperitivo.
Thank you Borana for your lovely company and a relaxing enjoyable evening.

Mr. Daniel S. from New Zealand travelled on 22 Aug 2016:

The guides were brilliant, knowledgeable and friendly, and this tour became one of the highlights of my four week stay in Europe. I learnt a lot about Lucca, and not just the food, but about the history too. The guides were able to answer all my questions, and I was able to find out what I wanted to do in Lucca on the following day. I recommend doing this tour at the start of your stay in Lucca to get orientated in what is a great city, as well as have a fine time and some delicious food! Thanks 🙂

Ms. Kathryn K. from Italy travelled on 25 Mar 2016:

Thank you so much for your personal attention. It was great to experience the adventures of Lucca and to find the different places to try out. I was not aware of them and it was so wonderful to have the opportunity to enjoy the casual friendship to go along with the discovery. Best wishes. Thanks again.
